1. WHAT ARE DIESEL ENGINE INJECTION PUMPS

Diesel injection pumps are a key component of fuel supply systems in diesel engines. Their main function is to withdraw the diesel from the fuel tank and pump it to the engine (specifically into the combustion chamber) in a gradual and calibrated manner, via the injectors.

An injection pump consists of:

-     plunger elements equal to the number of cylinders

-     rack and pinion rod controlled by the accelerator pedal that regulates the amount of diesel being pumped

-     camshaft that regulates fuel delivery

2. HOW A DIESEL INJECTION PUMP WORKS

Injection pumps are needed to deliver calibrated amounts of fuel to the injectors. There are two types: rotary pumps and injector pumps.

Rotary pumps, popular in the past, have a rotating pump chamber that compresses the diesel fuel before delivering it to the injectors. This type of pump has slowly been replaced by injector pumps, or inline pumps, which are more efficient and offer greater fuel injection precision.

Injector pumps consist of a set of components that regulate the amount of diesel fuel sprayed into the injectors. These pumps work using the pressure generated by a low-pressure fuel pump that delivers the diesel to a high-pressure pump, which further compresses the fuel and delivers it to the injectors. Injector pumps offer greater diesel injection precision and are used to control the amount of fuel sprayed into the injectors according to engine demand.

3. USING AND MAINTAINING DIESEL INJECTION PUMPS

A diesel injection pump works by compressing the fuel (diesel) before injecting it into the injectors, and from there into the combustion chamber. This process requires high pressure, making it necessary for diesel injection pumps to be built with sturdy and resilient components that can handle the pressure and thus ensure the proper operation of the fuel supply system.

It is also important to note that injection pumps must be carefully timed. The pumps are a complex and delicate mechanical system, the proper functioning of which directly affects engine performance. The number of high-pressure metal pipes (plunger elements) coming out of the injection pump is equal to the number of engine cylinders, and the speed regulator and timing variator are both connected to the pump.

Given the complexity and sensitivity of this system, pump control in some engines is entrusted to an electronic unit.
